SAT Math practice: Content domain
SAT Advanced Math Practice
Learn how to approach SAT advanced math with focused skill guides, original practice questions and worked explanations.
The short answer
SAT Advanced Math builds on algebra with equivalent expressions, nonlinear equations and nonlinear functions. Choose a form that exposes the information the question asks for: factored form for zeros, vertex form for a quadratic minimum or maximum, and an exponential form for repeated growth. Watch domain restrictions when dividing by an expression or squaring an equation, then check candidate solutions in the original equation.
Choose a skill to practice
Choose useful forms, connect expressions to graphs, and check restrictions on solutions.
Common questions
Why can a nonlinear equation have an extraneous solution?
Squaring both sides or clearing a denominator can introduce a value that does not satisfy the original equation. Substitute each candidate into the original equation and reject any value that makes a denominator zero or fails the equality.
How should I use these practice pages?
Read the method, answer the original sample questions and review the worked reasoning. If you miss a question, name the mistake before trying the next one. These examples teach a skill; they do not predict an official SAT score.
