An original passage says the team expected the lighter material to be weaker. Tests showed it resisted more force than the original. Before looking at transition choices, predict the relationship. The result runs against the expectation.

Nevertheless fits the contrast. Therefore would claim that the result followed from the expectation. For instance would introduce an example, and moreover would add a similar point. A familiar sounding word is not enough. Its logical job must match these two statements.

The evidence supports a result for the tested material. It does not show that all lighter materials are stronger. Keep the scope of any inference inside the stated evidence. Transition meaning and evidence scope are different decisions, but both require reading the exact claim.

For a fresh check, the freezer stopped operating overnight. The samples thawed. This relationship is cause and effect, so consequently fits. Nevertheless would imply an unexpected contrast that the passage does not establish. Predict the relationship first, choose the word second.

Check the decision method

Predict the relationship: The team expected the lighter material to be weaker. Tests showed it resisted more force than the original. What relationship connects these ideas?

Choose contrast: The team expected the lighter material to be weaker. Nevertheless, tests showed it resisted more force. Contrast: nevertheless. Cause: therefore. Example: for instance. Addition: moreover.

Check scope and evidence: Supported: the tested lighter sample resisted more force. Unsupported: every lighter material is stronger. Keep a conclusion inside the evidence.

Transfer: cause, not contrast: The freezer stopped operating overnight. Consequently, the samples thawed. Now the second event is a result of the first.

Attempt a fresh check

The first batch contained four missing labels. The second batch also contained missing labels. Which transition fits: Similarly or Consequently? Explain.

Answer: Similarly. The second statement adds a comparable result. The passage does not establish that the first batch caused labels to be missing in the second.
